The Merrill Jaycee's held their annual distinguished service award banquet this past Thursday at Don's Steak House. Award winners included Wayne Marrier - Key Man award, James Edwards - outstanding young educator, Wilburn (Bill) Weber - outstanding young man, Alan Brandenburg - outstanding young farmer, and Dennis Schalow - outstanding Jaycee boss.
Dick Baumgart has been appointed by County Board Chair Patrick Nugent to fill the vacancy. Baumgart is a life insurance salesman for Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Company.
After a convincing 36-14 win over Rhinelander this past Saturday at Jay Stadium the Merrill Blue Jay football team will try for their seventh win of the season over Wisconsin Rapids this Friday. On a historical prospective only the teams of 1919, 1928, 1954, and 1959 saw six wins in a season. If the Jays earn their seventh victory it will be a first. Standing in the Jays' way is the 5-3 Red Raiders. Meanwhile the JV freshman squad finished the season unbeaten. Bob Semling and Don Wendorf opened the game against Shawano with a 56 yard scoring strike as the Jays downed the team from Shawano. Arvo Britten leads the squad and noted Jim Wolff and Doug Grisa on defense and Jon Malm and Bob Semling on offense were standouts in the team's last victory of the season.
Holy Chinook! Ron Lass, Bob Savaske, and Jim Mitchell all of Merrill hauled in 300 pounds of Chinook at an island near Sturgeon Bay recently. The trio is pictured with their lunkers which ranged in weight from 15 to 30 pounds.

Political ads fill the paper just before the fall elections. Republican candidates featured in a half page ad include Ron Krueger for Sheriff, Ken Oldenburg for County Clerk, Warren Weckwerth Register of Deeds, Florian Koehler County Treasurer, Christopher Coakley DA, James Janowiak Coroner, and Janet Beyer Thums for Clerk of Court.
Chuck Lange of Lange Enterprises - Oconomowoc reported to the Town Supervisors this past week that the new rural address numbering system is going well with six townships already mapped, a seventh surveyed and seven more to be completed. Lange expects to complete the project by the March 1983 deadline. The system will grid the entire county and provide a county wide standard addressing system. Costs to townships and taxpayers include new address signs for property and new road signs for the numerous duplicate roads that will need to be re-named.
Bruce's Coverall is celebrating its first anniversary. Among the many specials this week, bargain hunters can find paint at only $11.09 a gallon. The store is located at 820 E. 1st St.

The Merrill community experienced its first snow of the season, and the office of emergency government is reminding residents to be prepared for this upcoming winter. Two separate storms brought snow to the area this past week.
Celebrating their 25th year, the Merrill Optimist Club recently installed their new officers. Bob Marlowe will serve as president, Greg Schield and Jacquelyn Talberg as vice presidents, and Dee Olsen as treasurer.
With one game left in the regular season the Merrill Blue Jay football team improved to 2-5 after beating the Rhinelander Hodags this past week. The Jays will take on Steven's Point on Thursday in the final game of the regular season.
