Adam Schmitz proudly shows off a tobacco plant she cared for all summer long. The plant was brought to Merrill by Schmitz's son Lloyd who obtained it in Cottage Grove, WI. The elder Schmitz worked in Monroe County's tobacco fields almost 60 years ago and he cared for the four plants since planting them on July 6.

Father Peter Szleszinski, Pastor of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, and Father Roger L. S. Lott O.S.B., Chaplain of Holy Cross, left Monday for a three week tour of Europe. Cities of interest on their tour include London, Paris, Frankfurt, Vienna, Florence, Rome, Geneva, and Madrid.

Mr. and Mrs. John Cotter Jr. are the new owners of Park City Liquor, 100 N Foster St. The store was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Roman Radlinger who operated the business for the last five years. In an accompanying ad Ruth and Roman along with Judy Purcell thank their customers and wish the Cotters the best.

A passing attack led by quarterback Steve Dahm led the Merrill Blue Jay football team past Steven's Point for the first homecoming victory at Jay Stadium since 1960. Dahm was 7 of 11 for 174 yards and four scores. The Blue Jays remain undefeated and will now face D. C. Everest who holds a 4-1 record. A family affair will play out in next week's contest as assistant coach Ray Cheyka will face his brother Ed Cheyka, a stand out full back playing for Everest.

A 14 year old Fond du Lac boy is back in custody at Lincoln Hills School; again. The youth escaped twice in the last week and is believed to be involved in seven auto thefts from the area. His latest escape occurred when Detective Jerry Schroeder and Juvenile Officer Robert Hartkopf took the handcuffed youth out to US Hwy 51 near County Rd H so he could show them where he and another youth had been during their previous escape. The youth, who had been a member of his school's running club prior to his incarceration, was apprehended by Marathon County deputies Monday night.

About a dozen students from Midway School will play extras in a horror movie being shot in Lincoln County. "Devonsville" is a story about a new school teacher in a western Massachusetts town who just happens to be a witch. The movie is being filmed at the Rebane film studio in Gleason along with the Irma area, and at the Brickyard School House at the fairgrounds. Suzanne Love stars in the movie which also features Geraldine Bloechl of Merrill who will play the school teacher who is leaving and introduces the class to Miss Love.

It's Harvest Moon Festival in Merrill this weekend. Entertainment specials include The Duke Boy's at Maria's Legion Lounge; Mid City Tap will have Nashville North; the Cork and Dyne has Friday night fish fry's for $2.95 and Saturday prime rib for $7.95, Stueber's will have The Dave Edwards Group in the Candlewood Room, and at the Cosmo it's The Pirate Movie in Cosmo one and Fast Times at Ridgemont High in Cosmo two.

How much oil spilled in Gleason is the question being asked on page two. According to first official reports a spill at Remington Oil of number two heater and fuel was estimated at 200 gallons but Jerry Remington, owner of Remington Oil, stated the whole matter has been blown out of proportion and only 10-15 gallons spilled. Either way, soil has been removed and replaced with new and environmental testing is underway.

Seven of the 16 new members of the Silver M Club will be greeted by their father when the club meets next week for homecoming and their induction. The latest group to join include Dave Adams, Warren Behm, Keith Burrows, Dan Detjens, Gordon Hanrahan, Jon Koehler, Stu Kraft, Steve Mumma, Bob Oestreich, Dave Pophal, Steve Seeger, James Schneider, Larry Schuman, Jeff Weber, Phil Weckwerth, Mike Zwirchitz. Golden M's this year include Ed Bruhn, Donald Cross, Richard Hason, Pat Hasset, Coach Lynn Jourdan, Keith McDonald, Ray Pophal, Charles Utecht, Warren Weckwerth, Dale Zentner and Ed Zwirchitz.
