Fall primary election results are in. Merrill attorney Ron Priebe defeated sitting District Attorney James T. Rogers in the Republican primary. Priebe will face off against Tomahawk attorney Dennis Montabon who was unopposed on the Democrat side of the ballot. In the Democratic race for sheriff, Robert Bassett defeated Lawrence Morren and will go head to head against incumbent Sheriff Alfred Geise in November. Only 50 percent of the people who cast a ballot Tuesday weighed in on the referendum to build a new Jefferson Elementary School. Those who did sent the measure to defeat by a margin of 237 votes. School Superintendant Roger Lowney vows to press on to secure funding for the building. Sheehan Donoghue, a Merrill Republican, defeated Phillip Brown of Tomahawk and William Yoder of Kempster to earn a spot on the ballot for the newly created 35th assembly post.

Patrick Nugent will be Donoghue's opponent in the November election for the assembly seat. He announced his campaign committee which includes chair William Wulf, secretary treasurer Darlene Hinz, and members Milton Wistein, La Vern Henrichs, Carolyn Hansen and others. A fund raising dinner for Nugent will be held Sept. 24 at Don's Steak House in Merrill. Senator Gaylord Nelson will be the featured speaker.

The Merrill Blue Jay football team is still undefeated after upending the Tomahawk Hatchets 31-0. The Jays now move into the Valley for their first conference game this Saturday as they take on Shawano at home. Sports writer Rob Orcutt notes the Henrichs Club will be taking on the Club 107 Giants on Saturday to settle the Lincoln County Championship. The teams have split the first two games in the three game series. Orcutt notes if Dale Mitchell pitches the Henrichs team is a sure bet to repeat as champions.

Krueger defeated Ron Hirte on the Republican side of the ballot. Incumbent Coroner Dr. James Janowiak defeated Robert Figge in the Republican primary and will be unopposed in November. County Clerk Kenneth Oldenburg will also be unopposed in November; he defeated Alfred Wendland by an almost two to one margin.

Despite the fact the 32nd Brigade of the US Army National Guard was put on the deactivation list last year the men and women of the Merrill group are going about their business and hoping the cuts do not come. Sgt. First Class David Wendorf notes the company is expecting new tanks; the same model that was used recently in the Persian Gulf War. Over $400,000 a year comes into Merrill each year through the National Guard.
