Voter turnout is expected to be large in the fall primary less than a week away. A three way Republican primary will decide who advances to the November election for the newly created 35th assembly district, vying for the spot are Sheehan Donoghue, Bill Yoder and Phillip Brown. Republicans Ron Priebe and James T. Rogers are facing off for the Republican spot for the District Attorney post. In the Democratic primary Lawrence Morren and Robert Bassett are both running for sheriff.
Another item on the ballot is the bond referendum to replace the 1912 Jefferson School. A full page ad on page seven paid for by the school board passes along the concerns of Merrill Fire Chief Ray Priebe and Ludwig Hodkiewicz state plumbing inspector regarding the condition of the building, and the support of city council president Ellsworth Plautz who questions the efforts of the sixth ward taxpayers to build other schools throughout the district while values of homes in the ward will surely decline with a substandard building serving them.
The Merrill Bluejays football team is not spending much time celebrating their victory over Pacelli as they fret about next week's game against a strong Tomahawk Hatchet squad. Coach Ira Rebella noted the Hatchets' strong passing combination of quarterback Rick Parsons and wide receiver Tom Kahle. In Saturday home opener the Bluejays put on a defensive show, Tom Schulz, Bob Akey, George Johanson, Rick Semling, Bruce Muschinske, John Leist and Tom English were all standouts on defense limiting the visitors to 112 yards, of those only 10 were on the ground.

Hotly contested local races fill the paper this week as a strong field will face off next Tuesday. At a candidate forum yesterday each candidate stressed their qualifications in advance of the primary. The most crowded field is for the job of Sheriff where the field of five men will be down to three by next week. Dave Haskins and Paul Proulx are on the Democratic ticket while incumbent Sheriff Ron Krueger and Ron Hirte are on the Republican side. Tomahawk City Clerk Paul Garner is running as an independent. County Clerk Ken Oldenburg faces competition from Al Wendland and Coroner Dr. Jim Janowiak is asking that voters continue the 26 year tradition of having a physician as Coroner as he battles Robert Figge in the Republican primary.
The Merrill Bluejays dropped their second game of the season during their valley opener against Wisconsin Rapids. Kevin Golisch was back of the week and Greg Geiger was lineman of the week. The squad will take on Wausau West this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Work is going well on old City Hall and according to community development director Mike Martin the building should be open by Nov. 1. Sixteen apartments will soon occupy the once idle and dilapidated building. According to the Alexander Company which is spearheading the project the biggest challenge is finding the 9000 bricks that are being matched and replaced on the outside.
The annual meeting of the board of education was held this past week and school administrators noted the state's cut in financial aid is the biggest stumbling block in this year's budget. The state reduced the district by $700,000 this year which combined with an increase in salaries and fringe benefits will add an additional 1.3 million dollars in local tax money to the school system.
The Park and Recreation Department is readying the fairgrounds for this weekend's Labor Day festivities. The traditional parade route will be followed starting at 10 a.m. Following the parade entertainment at the fairgrounds includes a classic car show, flea market, the Republican chicken Barbecue, an antique tractor pull and free rides for the kids. For those looking for music Deuce Coup will play at the Jaycee Food Stand, the Jackson Family will be at the grandstand, and the Greenbush Fife and Drum Corp will perform at noon in front of the food stands.
