Lincoln County Sheriff's reports

Dec. 12, 2012 | 0 comments

Roads in Lincoln County were snow covered and slippery as of late Sunday night. The Highway Department worked from 3 p.m. on Sunday to keep roadways clear but deputies reported by 6 p.m. that the snow was falling faster than it could be cleared. Deputies used the department's four wheel drive patrol vehicles to get around Sunday as they responded to just a few slide offs and a couple of minor crashes. The Highway Department rested its drivers late Sunday and returned to clearing snow at 4 a.m.

The Town of Russell Fire Department was called out Monday afternoon after a resident of the Town of Schley reported an alarm sounding. Just before 4 p.m. a resident in the 3000 block of State Rd 17 reported their carbon monoxide detector was sounding and it's displayed showed a dangerous level of C0. Russell Firefighters responded to the scene and found a faulty detector was to blame for the alarm. They left a loaner unit until the owner could replace theirs.

The Merrill Fire Department responded to a chimney fire Tuesday afternoon in the Town of Scott. A 911 call reported the fire at a residence in the 500 block of Fairview Rd. Firefighters were on the scene for less than an hour.

A 56 year old Merrill man was injured after a one vehicle crash early Wednesday morning in the Town of Merrill. A passerby found a vehicle rolled over at the intersection of State Rd 107 and Swede Rd just after 2 a.m. Merrill Police Officers were close to the crash scene and arrived at the scene within minutes of the 911 call. A Merrill Officer who is also a paramedic requested a helicopter respond to transport the victim Angus S. Edyburn after finding him trapped in the vehicle. Firefighters from the Merrill Fire Department freed Edyburn from the vehicle using the jaws of life and transported him to an improvised landing zone which was set up at the MARC Center. From there MedEVac flew Edyburn to Aspirus where he was released Friday. The deputy who investigated the crash is awaiting chemical tests but indicated a second offense charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated will be sought.

A 28 year old Wausau man was injured after a one vehicle crash Thursday morning in the Town of Merrill. Scott R. Miskowkiak told a deputy he was turning on his windshield wipers when his vehicle lost control on the snow covered roadway at State Rd 17 and Lacelle Rd causing his vehicle to leave the roadway and strike some trees. Miskowkiak was transported by Merrill EMS to Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies will be working extra shifts through the end of the month as they hope to assist the achievement of "Zero in Wisconsin." Grant money will be used to provide extra patrol cars on the road through the holidays. Deputies will focus on speed, seat belt use and removing drunk drivers from the roadways. Sheriff Jeff Jaeger noted, "The holidays are a time to focus on family and traditions, not to deal with the tragic aftermath of a preventable crash. Slow down, buckle up and drive sober if you plan on driving in Lincoln County."

A 16 year old Tomahawk woman was injured after a one vehicle crash Saturday morning in the Town of Merrill. Just before 10 a.m., a cell 911 call reported the crash on County Rd C east of County Rd K. According to the deputy who investigated the crash, Myranda M. H. Paul was traveling west on County Rd C when she lost control of her vehicle, entered the south ditch and rolled over. Paul was transported by Merrill EMS to Aspirus Wausau Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Two people were injured after a one vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in the Town of Rock Falls. At 1:44 p.m. a 911 call reported the crash on State Rd 107 north of County Rd E. When deputies arrived they learned that a vehicle being driven by 57 year old Shirley M. Bushar left State Rd 107 and hit trees. Bushar, along with a passenger in her vehicle, 37 year old Kevin S. Stadler, were injured in the crash. Bushar was transported to Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center and later to Aspirus Wausau Hospital. As of Sunday evening she was listed in stable condition. Stadler was flown from the scene by MedEVac helicopter to Aspirus where he was listed in fair condition Sunday. Deputies are still investigating what caused Bushar to leave the roadway.

Ten people reported striking deer this past week, down from previous weeks' totals. A bear was also struck. On Friday a Merrill man reported striking the cub on US Hwy 51 near Irma. The cub was tagged to a passerby.
