Lincoln County Sheriff’s reports, 8-21-13 edition
A 40 year old Merrill man was injured after a crash early Wednesday morning in the Town of Corning. The driver told deputies he was traveling north on State Rd 107 when he swerved to avoid a deer, causing his vehicle to crash on the Lincoln County side of the county line. After the crash, the man drove home and then called 911. The man was transported by Lincoln County EMS to Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center where he was treated for his injuries.
A 37 year old Merrill man remains in the Lincoln County Jail after a deputy investigated a theft case in the Town of Merrill. The victim phoned the Sheriff’s Office last Sunday and reported a large screen TV was stolen from her home and she suspected the 37 year old who was staying at the home. When contact was made with the suspect, he offered an alibi and stated he too was the victim of the same thief with a tattoo kit of his being stolen. As the deputy investigated the case, he received assistance from a Merrill Police Officer who found a witness that the suspect had pawned the TV set at a store in Schofield. A warrant was issued for the suspect’s arrest by his probation officer and he was taken into custody on Tuesday morning. On Friday, the suspect was formally charged with the theft and for obstructing an officer for lying about the theft of the tattoo kit. At a bond hearing, a Lincoln County Judge set a signature bond; the man remains jailed on a probation hold.
Scammers almost cheated an elderly Merrill woman this past week but a call to the Sheriff’s Office prevented a loss. The Town of Schley woman was called on Friday morning and a young male told her that he was her grandson and he had been arrested and jailed in Mexico. A second male got on the phone and claimed to be from the Embassy and provided the woman with instructions on how to “bail” out her grandson. The woman wired over $1,200 to the fake grandson and was just about to call and give the four digit pin needed to collect the funds when she instead called the Sheriff’s Office. A deputy responded to the woman’s home and was able to ensure her grandson was safe and not in jail. The deputy was also able to reach Western Union who refunded the woman’s money.
Five people reported striking deer this past week, lower than last week’s total.
