When Swedish pioneers immigrated to early Merrill, they not only brought their treasured heirlooms and family recipes, they also brought the centuries-old tradition of honoring Santa Lucia. Santa Lucia, the saint of light and growth, is the Swedish harbinger of the Christmas season.
When the Merrill Historical Society was gifted the former Bethlehem (Swedish) Lutheran Church, it seemed fitting to honor the congregation’s Scandinavian roots. Thus began the Society’s annual Santa Lucia Concert. This year the celebration will be held on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. at the Heritage Center, 100 E. Third St. The program will feature favorite Merrill musicians followed by the appearance of Santa Lucia, adorned with a radiant crown of light. This year Cate Murray, a fourth grader at Kate Goodrich Elementary School, will portray Santa Lucia.
The program will open with a capella selections by Merrill High School’s outstanding singing troupe, the Vocal Jayz. The Jayz are under the direction of Mr. Jim Bjorklund.
The concert will continue with one of the highlights of the annual program, vocal solos by Mr. Bjorklund. Harp and violin accompaniment will be provided by Carol and Dave Finanger.
The Finangers will then present a program of their favorite holiday duets. Carol and Dave have been performing together for thirty years and never fail to please their listeners.
To close the concert, the Society welcomes back organist Dan Page, who has selected a number of seasonal pieces for the pipe organ. Mr. Page is Director of Music and an organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Merrill.
The public is invited to enjoy an hour of beautiful music, followed by traditional Swedish refreshments.
Admission to the concert is free; however, seating is limited and advance tickets are required. Tickets are available at the Merrill Historical Society office, 102 E. Third St., Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
