The Aurora Pharmacy, 1021 E. Main St. in downtown Merrill closed Friday after it and nine other locations were sold to Walgreens.

The move came as the Aurora Pharmacy chain sold a total of 30 of its locations, many in retail locations, as part of a restructuring plan to consolidate operations. In addition to the 10 locations sold to Walgreens, 20 were sold to Roundy’s. All of the closed locations were outside of the eastern Wisconsin service area where it will continue to operate 81 stores.

According to John Gates, Aurora Pharmacy director of operations, many of the locations affected by the sale were too small to offer the full range of services which includes home medical supplies. He said these locations could not be integrated into the new system the company was setting up.

All employees of the Merrill store will be interviewed for possible employment within the Walgreens company. All prescriptions from the Merrill store were transferred to the Walgreens at 101 N. Center Ave.

The contents of the Merrill store were removed over the weekend with the process being completed Monday.
