The Merrill Rangers took a couple of disappointing losses over the past week to drop them to 3-4 in the Dairyland League
“We’re in a tough spot now,” Merrill manager Shawn Schultz said. “If we want to make the playoffs we’ve got to win (the last) three (Dairyland) games.”
Merrill dropped a 4-2 contest to Everest, one of the top teams in the league, on Wednesday, then fell 13-2 to undefeated Wausau on Saturday.
The Rangers trailed just 1-0 after six, but a two-run homer chased Shultz from the game, and the Merchants added another in the top of the ninth.
Merrill responded with two runs in the ninth on an Alex Cordova double, Alex Grunenwald RBI double and Chris Grunenwald run-scoring hit.
“It was a good game,” Schultz said. “We just started hitting a little too late.”

Riverhawk swoop
Merrill kept Wausau in range for much of the game before it slipped away.
“It was 6-2 and still a game in the fifth, but things went south in the sixth and seventh,” Schultz said. “They’re a good team. They’ve got some younger guys playing with their older guys. (Jordan) Huehnerfuss pitched for West the last couple of years and he pitched well.”
