Merrill Police Reports - August 13, 2014

8:02 a.m.- A caller reported receiving a fraudulent letter in her mailbox supposedly from the IRS. The caller went on to state that someone had rang her doorbell. She didn’t answer and the person then placed the letter in her mailbox. The letter was likely a way for the suspect to attempt to gather personal identifying information. The letter was destroyed.
1:38 p.m.- A fight was reported outside the library. The fight allegedly followed a verbal altercation between a 14-year-old male and 22-year-old male. Based on statements, the 14-year-old began swinging at the 22-year-old with one punch making contact causing a black eye. The 22-year-old then placed the 14-year-old in a headlock. Enforcement action will be taken pending additional statements/investigation.
2:27 p.m.- A male with a warrant for his arrest through the Merrill PD was found at a circuit court hearing. The warrant was confirmed and the man was arrested for that warrant at the conclusion of his other hearing.
3:15 p.m.- A caller reported dropping her cell phone which she reported was picked up by a teenage girl who took the phone and fled on a bicycle. Investigation continues.
10:55 p.m.- A caller in the 400 block of N. Prospect St. reported his wife woke him up stating she saw the garage light on and the silhouette of a person standing in the garage door. The K9 unit was deployed and Eros did not find anybody inside the garage. Officers cleared the garage confirming nobody was inside. The owner checked and did not find anything missing from the garage. Nobody was located in the area.
8:29 a.m.- The PD received a counterfeit $20 bill which was received at the recent fair. The bill was sent to the US Secret Service.
9:33 a.m.- A caller reported his vehicle was damaged sometime overnight. A possible suspect was identified, investigation continues.
9:44 a.m.- Social Services requested a 15-year-old male be taken into custody for violating his supervision. The young man was taken into custody and transported to secure detention.
1:15 p.m.- A crash was reported in the 1700 block of W. Main St. A vehicle had been backing out of a driveway and didn’t see a vehicle on W. Main St. The driver of the backing vehicle was cited for unsafe backing.
1:32 p.m.- A caller reported an 11-year-old out of control at a residence who was attempting to arm himself with knives. The child was taken into custody, transported to Social Services and ultimately transported to juvenile shelter in Wausau.
11:13 p.m.- An officer stopped a vehicle for a registration violation. A male passenger fled from the vehicle once it stopped. The officer recognized the male from past prior contact. The man currently has a warrant for his arrest through the Merrill PD. Officers attempted to locate the man but they were unsuccessful. A warrant will be requested for the man for a charge of resisting an officer and felony bail jumping.
10:56 a.m.- An officer responded to the probation and parole office. One male party was taken into custody for a probation violation. He was booked into the jail.
4:43 p.m.- An officer responded to a theft complaint. The caller had a child’s Mongoose BMX bicycle stolen from the residence.
7:30 p.m.- An officer responded to a theft complaint. The caller had an after-market stereo stolen from their vehicle.
1:17 a.m.- Officers responded to a disorderly conduct complaint at a local tavern. A male party was outside yelling and jumping on a picnic table. The male was spoken to and was warned for disorderly conduct. He was told to leave the tavern for the evening and willingly did so.
2:30 p.m.- An officer responded to a smoke report. The officer located the bonfire that was creating a large amount of the smoke. The suspect was informed of the ordinance and agreed to put out the fire to cease the neighborhood nuisance.
8:12 p.m.- Officers responded to a juvenile who was out of control. The juvenile was spoken to about their behavior and Social Services was contacted due to previous issues. The juvenile was taken into custody and was taken to juvenile shelter care.
6:36 a.m.- A caller reported her purse was stolen from her vehicle sometime overnight. The purse was recovered by Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies. It was located in a vehicle stolen in the county. The suspect was apprehended and was charged with theft from this case in addition to charges by deputies for the stolen vehicle and other thefts.
11:49 a.m.- A business reported they have had three commercial style ashtrays stolen from their property over the past few months.
2:54 p.m.- A business called after finding a truck driver’s vehicle had seemingly been entered while parked at the business. The truck’s owner later called to report nothing missing from the vehicle, however he believes some fuel had been siphoned from the fuel tank.
3:31 p.m.- A caller reported his vehicle was stolen sometime overnight. The vehicle was recovered in Merrill and three suspects were quickly identified. It was found a 13-, 14- and 16-year-old had stolen the vehicle overnight. The keys had been left inside the vehicle allowing for an easy opportunity. The vehicle was returned to the owner and the three youths were referred to Social Services for operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
4:07 p.m.- A store called after finding a male stealing inside the store. It was found the man, who had been caught stealing at the store in the past, had stolen a pack of gum and bottle of medication. He was arrested for shoplifting.
6:41 p.m.- A request for a welfare check was requested after a 16-year-old male had received 2nd degree burns on his hand following an incident with sparklers. It was found a father and his sons had placed fireworks inside a stuffed animal leading to the mishap. A report was completed and sent to Social Services.
10:38 p.m.- An officer stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation. The officer requested the K9 unit and Eros indicated a positive alert to the odor of drugs coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a trace amount of marijuana and a container with marijuana residue inside. The driver will be cited for possession of THC (marijuana) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
1:10 a.m.- An officer on patrol observed a male in Stange’s Park in violation of the park curfew hours. Additionally, the man began acting suspicious upon seeing the squad. Contact was made with the man, who was carrying a backpack which he allowed the officer to search. A bag of hypodermic needles was located inside which the man admitted he used to inject drugs. A digital scale with methamphetamine residue was also found in the backpack. The man had in his pants pocket a gem bag with residue that tested positive for methamphetamine. The man was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of bail jumping.
1:58 a.m.- An officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a driver’s view obstruction violation. The vehicle stopped and a passenger fled the scene on foot. The vehicle was found to have numerous gem bags with residue (later testing positive for methamphetamine) scattered on the passenger-side floor. The driver was found to be operating the vehicle under the influence of drugs. He was arrested for operating while intoxicated. A search of him revealed he was in possession of a gem bag containing methamphetamine residue and a gem bag containing prescription medication in which he did not have a prescription for. He was additionally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine, possession of illegally obtained prescription and probation violation. The passenger’s identity is known and a warrant for his arrest was requested for charges of resisting an officer, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
12:08 p.m.- A caller reported the theft of a GPS unit from his unlocked vehicle sometime in the past four days. A GPS unit was recovered by Lincoln County deputies two days prior in a stolen vehicle, amongst other stolen items. The owner will be coming to the PD to identify the GPS unit.
10:46 p.m.- The Department of Corrections requested a male be arrested for a probation violation for violating the terms of his electronic monitoring. The man was taken into custody for the probation violation.
9:42 a.m.- A business owner called to report sometime overnight someone had thrown eggs at a painted mural painted on the business.
10:37 a.m.- A crash was reported at the intersection of Chippewa St and W. 8th St. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene and one driver was medically transported for medical evaluation. The offending driver was cited for failure to yield right of way and operating without insurance. Crash report completed.
11:01 a.m.- A caller reported items stolen from the storage area of an apartment complex. The area is shared by several tenants and the theft occurred sometime since September of 2013. The caller also reported a piece of jewelry stolen from her apartment.
