Storm topples trees, knocks out power in Merrill and Gleason

Severe thunderstorms passed through North Central Wisconsin Monday night, leaving their mark on the Merrill area.

One of the hardest hit areas in the city of Merrill was the east side, including the cemeteries, the former Whispering Pines mobile home park and the neighborhood on the north side of Thielman Street. Numerous trees, both large and small, were uprooted or snapped off by the wind. Residents in the area reported that the damage occurred around 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Areas of tree damage were also evident along Hwy. 17 northeast of the city and extending north of the Gleason area.

Between Merrill and Gleason, power outages were impacting more than 1,400 Wisconsin Public Service customers Tuesday morning. As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, WPS reported 20 outages in the Merrill area, impacting 409 customers; and seven outages in the Gleason area impacting 901 customers.
