After his cardboard tank didn’t quite survive its first pass down Lions Hill, Haakon Murphy, 9, used what was left of his sled for a second attempt. The gun turret from the tank ejected Haakon about halfway down the hill, but he still got up smiling.
Cardboard Sled contestants and their parents trek up Lions Hill Saturday to test their cardboard creations. While it wasn’t a required part of the contest, all of the sled builders were anxious to hit the slope.

The Merrill Optimist Club hosted its annual Winterfest Cardboard Sled Contest Saturday at Lion’s Park. Local kids and their adult assistants put together some creative cardboard conveyances. Prizes were given out in a few different categories.
Issac Bushar and his Arctic Cat snowmobile sled won best detail; Chevy Teske and his monster truck sled took best use of color; Haakon Murphy and his tank sled won best theme; and Aaron Shank and Bryan Magill were awarded best construction and durability.
Participants were not required to take their sleds down Lions Hill, but every one of them chose to challenge their designs and descend the hill after judging.
