Robert “Bob” C. Van Slate

Robert “Bob” C. Van Slate, age 77, a resident of Conover for 45 years, passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. Sadly, we lost a very good man who ascended into Heaven and was reunited with his grandchildren: Abigail Rain and Nikolas Robert.  He joins them with his loyal companion, Rivers, by his side.
Bob was born August 8, 1940 in Merrill, WI to parents Elroy and Vivian Van Slate.  He served actively in the U.S. Navy until transferring to the Naval Reserve.  Bob met Karen Ann Leavitt, fell in love and on Nov. 10, 1962 they joined lives and were married. Bob worked as a switchman for GTE/ Verizon for 31 years.  His true passion was fishing, whether it was ice fishing on South Twin Lake or deep sea fishing in Florida.  This led him to becoming a walleye guide and remained one for many, many years.  Bob loved camping with Karen on Lake Superior every April through September. He enjoyed hunting, football, Brewers, Badgers and Bears.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents and 2 grandchildren.  He is survived by his loving wife, Karen, of 56 years;  3 daughters:  Lisa (Gary) Frey of Madison, WI, Debra (Ray) Turney of Antigo, WI and Reagon (David) Hapka of Conover, WI;  1 sister: Carol Jean Osness of Merrill, WI;  5 grandchildren:  Tyler, Zacharie, Tayore, Madison and Lakken;  1 great grandchild:  Payton and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River, WI.  Visitation will be held at 11:00 AM prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers donations to Bob’s wife, Karen to disperse to his favorite charities, are appreciated.
