Merrill cross country finished off conference meets for the year running in the WVC (Wisconsin Valley Conference) meet at Standing Rock Park in Stevens Point on Saturday.
“Our teams had excellent conditions to run in today, and most of them took advantage of it,” said coach Matt Juedes. “These postseason meets are exciting to watch because anything can happen. On the girls side, our varsity came out with a lot of intensity and something to prove. Autumn Schenzel, Claire Drew, Anne Herdt and Lily Reimann all came out of the gates fast and recorded season bests. Sadie Wakefield busted out an amazing race on JV with a 24:43 and earned herself a spot on the varsity roster for sectionals.”
Coach Juedes went on to say, “On the boys side, our young team is continuing to race hard and improve. It’s been great to coach these boys. They continue to want to learn more about the sport even though we’ve nearly finished our season. That hunger for knowledge is what you want as a coach. Dominic Laufenberg lead the group, coming out hard and finishing strong. Stephen Koch also continues to run hard to be under that 19 minute mark. Jacob Novitch, Tanner Depies and Ethan Cordova also recorded PRs to close out the scoring for us. We’re peaking at the right time and we’re looking to roll this success over to the sectional meet in Neenah.”
Merrill will head to Neenah on Friday (Oct. 20) to the Lake Breeze Golf Course where they will start running at 4 p.m.
