Many firsts for Hatchet swimmers at GNC meet

It was an ultra-successful night for the Hatchet swimmers this past Friday as they dominated the last GNC meet of the season.

Many firsts for the team include winning the 200-yard medley relay after 18 years, sweeping all three relays, setting three new school records and placing first or second in almost all events (the backstroke was 3-4). Out of the seven teams competing, Tomahawk placed first with 313.5 team points.

Starting with event one, the Hatchet A-Team of Megan & Kirstin Marcks, Katy Volz and Shelby Benaszeski placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a combined time of 1:54.63. The B-Team consisting of Jackie Elliott, Kaylie Svacina, Savanah Ristau and Kersten Zehner placed sixth with a combined time of 2:07.9.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Kylee Theiler placed second with a time of 2:03.34. In the 200-yard IM, Svacina placed second with a time of 2:18.97 and Kirstin Marcks placed third with a time of 2:27.53.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Rachel Dallman placed second with a time of 25.13 seconds and Benaszeski placed third with a time of 26.71 seconds. In the 100-yard butterfly, Volz placed first with a time of 1:02.24 and Megan Marcks placed second with a time of 1:03.68.

For the 100-yard freestyle, Dallman placed first with a time of 55.38 seconds and Benaszeski placed third with a time of 57.6 seconds. Kylee Theiler snagged second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:29.7.

The Hatchet A-Team consisting of Svacina, Benaszeski, Theiler and Dallman placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a combined time of 1:42.73. For the 400-yard freestyle relay, the A-Team consisting of Theiler, Volz, Dallman and Megan Marcks placed first with a combined time of 3:46.41.

Megan Marcks also placed third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.90 and right behind her was Volz in fourth with a time of 1:03.96.

Lastly, Kirstin Marcks and Alexis Burroughs of Ladysmith/Flambeau/Bruce HS tied for second in the 100-yard breast stroke with a time of 1:11.87 and Svacina placed fourth with a time of 1:12.73.

The Hatchet swim team will travel to Sectionals at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, Nov 5th with events to start at 1 p.m.
