Former Merrill teacher sentenced for sexual assault of student

Former Merrill High School choir instructor Chase Tonar, 26, who now lives in Franksville, Wis., was sentenced Wednesday to four months in jail for having sex with a student in 2015.

Following a plea agreement, Tonar pleaded no contest to one felony count of sexual assault of student by school staff. Two additional, identical charges were dismissed, along with two misdemeanor counts of having sex with a child age 16 or older.

In addition to the four month jail sentence, Judge Robert Russell ordered Tonar to 36 months probation, have no contact with victim, undergo counseling as recommended, sex offender evaluation and treatment and comply with 15 years of sex offender registration.

During the 2014-2015 school year, Tonar was the high school choir teacher and assisted in the band program. The Merrill Area Public Schools district accepted Tonar’s resignation in May 2015. He was arrested in July 2015.
