On Saturday, the lady Hatchets traveled to Medford for the second GNC volleyball meet. Unfortunately, the Hatchets lost to both Medford and Antigo.

The game against Medford was more or less one-sided as Medford defeated Tomahawk 3-0 with set scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-9. The game against Antigo was significantly closer and much better fought, with Coach Zierten calling it a “good loss.” Antigo defeated Tomahawk 3-2 with Tomahawk winnings sets two and four (26-24, 25-20) and Antigo winning sets one, three and five (25-12, 25-23, 15-7).

“We played well against Antigo and put up a great fight especially after being down 18-22 in one of the games,” comments head coach Paul Zierten. “I hate saying it was a ‘good loss’ but essentially it was because I saw some things I haven’t seen all season. We matured in some aspects of the game such as playing loose when the scores get in the 20’s. We don’t need to talk about Medford; we did not play well.

“I’m excited going into our final game Tuesday against Lakeland and am looking forward to being the 6th seed and going up against Mosinee next week; I think we’re a good matchup with them. Beth Bunce did a nice job spreading the ball out offensively and Sophie Wegner had a very good match against Antigo especially. Elena Wallenfang led us in kills and Delaney Langdon led in digs.”

Hatchet volleyball will have their last match on Tuesday when they will face Lakeland at 7 p.m. at home, and then they will start the first round of regional playoffs with a match against Mosinee next week.
