Tomahawk varsity volleyball traveled down to Merrill on Saturday for a tournament, facing off against Chippewa Falls, Pembine, Wittenburg-Birnamwood, DePere and Merrill.
For the most part, things went well for the lady Hatchets. They started the day 3-0, defeating Chippewa Falls (25-14, 25-15) and Pembine (25-10, 25-20), and barely edging out Wittenburg-Birnamwood (25-23, 16-25, 17-16). DePere handily defeated the Hatchets (11-25, 9-25) and they fought hard against, but ultimately lost to Merrill (24-26, 17-25).
“I was very happy with how we played today,” comments head coach Paul Zierten. “We had one bad match but starting the day 3-0 was a big confidence booster for us and kept us motivated to want more. We had a huge three-set win against Wittenburg with Maggie Latzig ending it with a block to push us ahead at 17-16. That win is one I’ll reference back to throughout the year because the girls had to fight hard for it.
“We lost a tough one to Merrill but I was extremely proud of the way we covered the court and kept the ball up against their big swings. Today the girls showed me that they are starting to believe in themselves and the team’s overall potential. When we were ‘on’ the ball would not hit the ground, which is the kind of volleyball I like to see us play.
“Taylor Shilts did a nice job today passing and getting the sets where they needed to be so we could have more of an offense than we have had lately. Elena Wallenfang swung really well today leading us in kills and gaining confidence in her abilities. Delaney Langdon dug some hard hits as I always expect her to. Courtney Theiler received all-tournament team for her consistent play all over the court and passing very well on serves. Danaca Shore, Sophie Wegner and Maggie Latzig all did a nice job blocking today which proved to be essential in winning many of the games.
“Overall I’m happy with our results and see progress from where we started the season; still plenty to work on but we’re making improvements each week.”
Tomahawk varsity volleyball will face Medford on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Medford.
