Playing a similar tune to that of the Wausau West game last week, Merrill varsity volleyball defeated Wisconsin Rapids-Lincoln on Thursday with a final match score of 3-0. Like last week, Merrill won the first three sets to win the match. The set scores were 25-11, 25-15 and 25-7.

“Tonight’s match gave us a chance to get more reps to our underclassmen,” comments head coach Kris Krug. “The veteran players were solid for the night. Kelsie Belfiori had another stellar serving performance with 15 consecutive serves in the first set.”

Belfiori had 22 total serving attacks and three aces with one error. Lindsey Casper also had a good day behind the line with 20 attacks and six aces, error-free. Morgan Wardall had 11 attacks, one ace and one error.

For attacks, Katie Zelinski again led the charge with 20 attacks and nine kills with only two errors.Morgan Wardall and Maddix Bonnell both had 13 attacks, with Maddix getting five kills and one error and Morgan getting six kills, error-free. Kaylee Bowe 11 attacks and four kills with three errors and Molly Weix five attacks and four kills, error-free.

“Molly Weix came off the bench and had four kills,” adds Krug. “Otherwise, our top hitters came through again with Katie Zelinski adding nine kills, Morgan Wardall six kills, and Maddix Bonnell five kills to spread out our hitting offense. Lindsey Casper added 16 assists.

“We definitely need to clean up our offense to beat high caliber teams in the future.”

Merrill volleyball will have a busy Saturday as they will be hosting a tournament at the MHS Fieldhouse, starting at 9 a.m. Teams include Tomahawk, Athens, Chippewa Falls, De Pere, Green Bay Southwest, Medford, Pembine, Stanley-Boyd and Wittenburg-Birnamwood.
