Merrill varsity volleyball traveled to DC Everest on Saturday for a tournament, coming in second in the pool behind Newman Catholic. DC Everest eventually won the tournament with Newman coming in second.

Merrill won both games against Tomahawk and East, and split with Newman and Menomonie.

“The highlight of the day was taking a game from Wausau Newman,” comments head coach Kris Krug. “We were digging balls and making smart plays. In a set like that we celebrate the points and play as a team. In the semi-finals against DCE, we gave the first set away and could not come back in set two. We were up by five points and had some key missed serves and shanked balls to lose a close one. Overall, we are continually gaining experience and giving the younger girls valuable reps they need to improve.”

Top hitters for Merrill included Katie Zelinski and Morgan Wardall. Katy had 83 attacks, 34 kills and eight errors. Morgan had 69 attacks, 26 kills and eight errors. Other hitters include Maddix Bonnell with 53 attacks, 16 kills and seven errors and Megan Schroder with 35 attacks, 11 kills and seven errors.

Kelsie Belfiori had another excellent night serving with 38 attacks, nine aces and three errors. Morgan also served well with 57 attacks, five aces and four errors. Lindsey Casper had 33 attacks, four aces and three errors.
