Merrill cross country shows energy at Marathon Invite

Press Release

“Our goal for this meet was to lower our collective times and run in packs,” stated Coach Hoffman, “and we accomplished both for the boys and for the girls.

“The weather could not have cooperated more than it did on Thursday. We didn’t have to worry about weather factors and I think the athletes knew they couldn’t make excuses for not performing well and that’s what happened.

“Senior Deanta Saunders ran at a nice clip and secured a solid third place and a medal for the girls. Close behind was Sophomore Dalie Thomas who ran another solid race. Sophomore Hunter Zecca and Junior Lily Riemann seesawed back and forth between 3rd and 4th, where Zecca zipped by Lily in the end to take the 3rd spot. Junior Autumn Schenzel ran a much improved 4th spot closely followed by Sophomore Anne Herdt who is a tremendously hard working runner who you don’t hear one peep of complaint during our practices. Additionally, the other finishers lowered their season personal records by seconds and in some cases, minutes.

“On the boys side,” stated Hoffman, “the foursome pack of Stephen Koch, Andrei Heisinger and Nathan Koch followed by Freshman Dominic Laufenberg showed their pack running ability by each placing close to each other. Our goal was run close, keep each other in our sights and to lower our collective times, and this happened with three of the four runners which bode well for our third place team finish. Freshman Ethan Cordova and Junior Jacob Novitch took the race seriously as they placed above the 50% mark and decreased or were near their best times of the year.

“This meet was a good shot in the arm for our program. It felt good to see the energy the teams exhibited and I’m looking forward to our Division One foes on September 10th down at Standing Rock County Park near Plover,” commented Hoffman.
