Lobsterfest grows in second year

The second annual Merrill Lobsterfest sold more tickets and served more lobsters in the hopes of making a larger donation to the Tomahawk-Merrill Tavern League’s Safe Ride Home Program.Merrill Fire Department firefighter/EMT Phil Skoug prepares to help diners crack into their lobsters. Representatives from local emergency services organizations volunteered as "crackers" for the event.

Last year’s inaugural event resulted in a $3,500 contribution to Safe Ride Home. Donations from local sponsors will help bolster that donation this year.Lobsterfest organizer Mike Fick introduced Larry the Lobster, one of the largest lobsters to make the trip from Maine to Merrill. He and another big lobster were auctioned off at the end of the event.

The staff of Ballyhoos, along with a host of volunteers, made the event run smoothly as the fresh Maine lobsters went from pot to plate. Representatives from local emergency response agencies volunteered as “crackers” to help diners dig in to their lobsters.
