After a series of losses over this past weekend’s tournament, Bluejay varsity softball came back with a well-deserved win over Marshfield.

Merrill hit the ground running in the bottom of the 1st with Lindsey Casper and Chelsey LaMonica both scoring runs off a hard ground ball to left field, courtesy of Kelsie Belfiori. The 2nd inning saw a similar play with Madisen Weix scoring a run off of Lindsey’s hard grounder to right field.

Right away in the bottom of the 3rd, LaMonica hit a powerful home run over the fence. Weix scored a run as courtesy runner for Calli Oberg, and Cassandra Casper would score a run off of Lindsey’s hard ground ball to center field.

Marshfield would score a run off a line drive hit in the 4th but Merrill responded with Belfiori hitting another hard grounder to left field, allowing LaMonica to score. Marshfield would gain the last of their runs in the 6th, one resulting from an error.

Merrill would score 2 more runs in the 6th with Oberg scoring a run off a Belfiori line drive hit to left field, and then Belfiori scoring off Cassandra Casper’s fly ball to center.  The game ended with a final score of 9-3, with Merrill garnering 13 hits and committing 3 errors.

“This was a very impressive offensive performance for us,” comments head coach Matt Ellenbecker. “As a team we are really becoming consistent and putting together solid at-bats and getting base runners. We have plenty of room for improvement when it comes to base running and getting out bunts down, but when it comes to just making the pitcher work and getting a pitch we want to hit and driving it, we have been very sound at the plate.”

“Marshfield has a very potent middle of the order, and, while they got some good swings in, Taylor did a nice job of scattering their hits and our defense was very opportunistic when Marshfield offered up some base running blunders of their own. This was a nice win for us coming off a weekend of great competition. Marshfield is a very solid team with a top-flight pitcher and catcher, so putting up 9 runs was great to see.”

Bluejay varsity softball will have their next game on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Tomahawk at the MARC.
