Harold E. Wegner

Harold E. Wegner, age 96, of the Town of Harding, Lincoln County, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016, under the care of hospice and surrounded by his loving family.

Harold was born on June 23, 1919, in the town of Corning, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Wegner. He married Esther Welch on March 14, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill.  She survives. Harold had dairy farmed in the town of Corning, and was also a school bus contractor with the Merrill Area Public School system for over 40 years. Harold was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, town of Corning. Harold enjoyed farming, hunting and fishing, and cooking maple syrup. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Harold served his country during World War II with the 148th General Hospital, and was stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, the Mariana Islands, and Saipan. After more than 4 years of service, Harold was honorably discharged.

Survivors include his wife, Esther Wegner, Merrill; two daughters, Lorraine Prebeg, Merrill, and Harriet Wegner, Corvallis, Oregon; six grandchildren, Daniel (Meredith) Prebeg, Matthew (Jessica) Prebeg, Michael (Amy) Prebeg, Brent (Jennifer) Waldrop, Rebecca (Jason) Barrett, and Brian (Tiffany) Waldrop; thirteen great-grandchildren, Allison and Ashley, Tristen and Izabella, Alyssa and Noah Harold, Samantha, Mark, Lucas, and Olivia, and Annie, Jace, and Claire; his sister, Dorothy Seidel, Merrill; his brother, William Wegner, Merrill; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Wolf, Hartford, Wisconsin. Harold was preceded in death by his father and step-mother, George and Emma Wegner; and two brothers, Emil Wegner and Eldor Wegner.

The funeral will begin at 11:00 AM Friday, February 5, 2016, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Town of Corning. The Rev. Joel Danner will officiate. Burial will follow in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Town of Corning, with graveside military rites conducted by the Merrill V.F.W. Post 1638 Honor Guard.

VISITATION WILL BE FROM 4:00 PM UNTIL 7:00 PM ON THURSDAY AT IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, TOWN OF CORNING, AND AGAIN AFTER 9:30 AM FRIDAY AT THE CHURCH.

The Wegner Family requests memorials be directed to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and Wisconsin Valley Lutheran High School.
