The first significant snow that fell in the county caused few problems on the roadways. During the course of the storm deputies kept a close on eye on the roadways for stalled motorists, helping a few along the way in the process. Only two minor crashes were investigated, both just outside of Merrill. On Wednesday evening a snow squall caused the highway north of Tomahawk to ice over, causing problems for numerous vehicles. A deputy found a vehicle in the ditch on US Hwy. 51 near Nibbler Road around 9 p.m. As he provided lights and checked on the occupants, other vehicles started sliding off the road as well. The highway department was called and was able to plow and salt, making the roadways safe for travel.

Residents took advantage of the recent snowfall to clear debris off their property. Over 50 people called in to report that they were having controlled burns. You are reminded that if you have 100% snow coverage most of the burning rules no longer apply. To make sure you are within the rules you can consult your local fire warden or the DNR web page. You should also call the Sheriff’s Office to report if you’re burning in a well-travelled area.
The number of car deer crashes has gone down considerably with only four being reported this past week.
