The 2015 varsity Girls Basketball season just started as of last week, however in looking at the work of the Bluejay varsity girls so far, that fact may not be as readily apparent.
The ladies have not only won both of their games to open the season, but have done so in rather decisive fashion.
On Friday night, the girls headed south to Shawano Community High School and came out with a nice 65-54 win over the Hawks.
Icing the victory cake was senior Anna Finnell and sophomore Maddix Bonnell both breaking into double-digit territory with 19 and 15 points respectively.
“Tonight was a great team effort,” commented head coach Ross Reincke. “Anna played really tough inside leading us with 19 points. As a team the girls finished the game after Shawano cut it to a one-point lead. They made a bunch of big shots down the stretch including two key threes by Maddix Bonnell and Lindsey Casper.”
Scoring: Anna Finnell(19pts, 5/7 FG, 5/7 FT, 5 reb); Maddix Bonnell: (15 pts, 5/5 FG, 2/4 FT, 5 reb, 5 ast); Patience Pyan (15 pts, 1/2 FG, 1/2 FT, 3/4-3 PT, 3 reb); Lindsey Casper (8pts, 2/3FT, 1/2-3pt, 3 reb, 2 ast); Rylee Folz (8 pts, 2/3 FG, 2/3 FT, 2 reb, ast)
Robbing the Raiders
Mer: 36 39-75
Med: 25 16-41
The ladies systematically dismantled Medford in their season opener last Tuesday.
Following a convincing 36-25 lead in the first half, the ladies unleashed a vicious artillery barrage in the second; culminating in a staggering 39-16 margin and 75-41 win over the Raiders.
“We started slow, but relied on our defense and worked back into the game,” Reincke added. “The girls played really hard and work really well as a team. Maddix Bonnell played a great game!
“Great shooting and pressure man-to man-defense allowed us to build the second half lead.”
Bonnell drained 21 points while another sophomore, Patience Pyan, stepped up to post double-digits with 19.
Scoring: Bonnell (21 pts); Pyan (19 pts); Allie Turenne (6 pts) Anna Finnell (6pts).
