City considers angle parking downtown

The Merrill Board of Public Works will consider implementing angle parking on Main Street downtown when it meets Wednesday night.
The measure calls for angle parking on three blocks of East Main Street from Court Street to Scott Street. The recommendation for angle parking came from the May 5 Redevelopment Authority meeting.
The Redevelopment Authority considered the angle parking as one of the items in a downtown vision plan that received support from a downtown business group.
Mike Morrissey of Redevelopment Resources noted that the city of Stevens Point has seen fewer accidents downtown since implementing angle parking.
Merrill did at one time have angle parking downtown, as shown in historical photographs.
The Board of Public Works is scheduled to meet Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall. The board will also discuss options for traffic lane parkings at the Pine Ridge Avenue/Hwy. 64 intersection.
A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. regarding a planned reconstruction of Superior and West Tenth streets. The project will include Superior from Grand Avenue to West Tenth Street and West Tenth Street from Superior Street to North State Street. The project will include sanitary and storm sewer replacement, water main, water and sewer laterals where needed, curb, gutter, sidewalk, paving and driveway aprons. There will be no special assessments for water main and sanitary sewer main replacements as part of the project. Special assessments would apply to property owners who choose to upgrade their driveway apron.
