County Authorities Avert Potential Tragedy

Wednesday evening, Lincoln County law enforcement agencies were advised of an armed woman who was en route to a residence in the county.

According to information received by the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office, a 42-year-old Chilton woman was armed and headed to a residence on Alber Road after making threats to kill her daughter, who lived in the area. Merrill officers along with deputies of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Wisconsin State Patrol, assisted in patrolling the area in an attempt to locate the vehicle in question.

At 11:51 p.m., a Merrill officer located the vehicle north of the city on USH 51. Based on the information received from Calumet County, a high-risk traffic stop was performed and the woman was taken into custody. Following a search of her vehicle, a .410 shotgun was recovered along with ammunition. The arresting officer was also the department’s Drug Recognition Expert and noted signs indicative of impairment about the woman. As a result, roadside sobriety testing and a Drug Evaluation and Classification Examination were performed. Due to the results, the woman was charged with Operating Under The Influence-1st Offense. She reportedly admitted to being on several prescription medications. Once in custody, the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office indicated their intention to seek mental health commitment for the woman and she was later released to the custody of a Calumet County deputy.
