Jays slip on Ridges

The MHS golf team ranked seventh in the first leg of the WVC Meet, but finished just six strokes out of fourth.
“The first leg of seven Valley Conference meets ended rough for the Bluejays, but some rays of sunshine were apparent on that cold and rainy day,” Merrill coach Joe Mertens said. “They could have fared much better with only a few less lost balls, penalties and a few more putts that could have dropped.
“Merrill was led by a fine round and great back nine from senior Kevin Lee. Coming onto the 18th green, I was apparent in his stride that Kevin was having a good round. He proceeded to fist pump in accomplishment as his 15-foot birdie putt found the hole. Senior Philip Guenther shot a solid performance round of 86, followed by senior Mike Pagel; each player shooting better on the tricky tight back nine which attests to their will and determination to never give up.
“For Brett Woller and Ryan Marsceau, scoring did not go well on this day. Mr. Steady sophomore Brett Woller’s ball control was a little off on the day and at the Ridges course that can cost a player strokes. It did for him and senior Ryan Marsceau.”
Lee collected 7.5 points in individual standings for his overall tie for seventh finish and Guenther scored 2 at 14th.
MHS–Kevin Lee 44-39–83; Philip Guenther 41-45–86; Mike Pagel 48-44–92; Brett Woller 48-53–101, Ryan Marsceau 49-55–104.
Standings– Stevens Point 320,  Marshfield 331,  Wausau West 347,  Wis. Rapids 356,  D.C. Everest 359, Wausau East 360, Merrill 362.
