“Our Daughter’s Chinese Heritage – China over the Centuries,” a collection of Chinese historical artifacts featuring the collection of the Johnson Family (David, Jana and Alexandra) is the latest Community ArtShare display at T.B. Scott Free Library. These fascinating pieces of history are on exhibit through the month of May on the library’s second floor.
David and Jana adopted their daughter Alexandra from China in 2003. While he was in China at that time, David began to collect Chinese artifacts, and has continued to do so ever since. While David’s initial intent was to provide Alexandra with objects connecting her to her native culture, he soon developed an interest in Chinese history that prompted him to develop a more extensive collection. David has accumulated a wide variety of objects representing Chinese culture, including carvings, pottery, china, coins, weapons, tools, ornaments, etc., in wood, mother of pearl, ivory, and other materials, including a coin from the reign of every Chinese Emperor.
As a family, the Johnsons celebrate several traditional Chinese holidays, including Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, Moon Festival, and Dragon Boat Festival, to keep Alexandra connected to her cultural roots.

The library’s “Beyond Books: Community ArtShare” features a new exhibit every two months on an ongoing basis. The program was made possible by a $10,000 grant from the Mead Witter Foundation, Inc. of Wisconsin Rapids.
