THS finishes strong

With the season winding down in fast forward mode, the Hatchet football team came up big and collected its second win. Tomahawk topped Rib Lake/Prentice 27-13 with a 14-0 second half.
“The second half would prove to be maybe the best half of football all season,” THS coach John Larson said. “Offensively, we put two more TD’s on the board, had no turnovers, controlled the clock and ran the ball very well. Defensively, we shut the Hawks out, and played very physical, inspired football. How our kids responded in that second half really defined their character. They played great football.”
The game featured streaky scoring. The Hatchets took a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard Jake Borchardt run to cap the opening 50-yard drive, and Isaac Schoone came up with a 29-yard pick-six to make it 13-0 early in the second quarter.
But two fumbles and an interception stalled the THS offense in the second and third quarters. The Hawks tied it up before halftime with an 81-yard screen pass from Taylor Brayton to Cody Van Luven three plays after Schoone’s interception and a two-yard Van Luven run with just :36 left.
Tomahawk closed out an 81-yard drive in the fourth quarter with a 3-yard Borchardt run and Lorne Ahrens 2-point conversion, and Kaleb Kaminski hit Ahrens with a 6-yard pass with 1:41 left to make it 27-13.
THS held a 339-188 advantage in yards gained, with 276 on the ground. Borchardt (18-146), Kaminski (14-80), Ahrens (5-31) and Dane Borchardt (5-15) led the way. Kaminski completed 4-10 passes for 63 yards to Jordan Roessler (1-30), Aaron Leonhard (1-25) and Ahrens (2-8).
The defense was paced by: D. Borchardt (3 S, 3 A, 1 sa); Schoone (3 S, 2 A, 1 int.); Kaminski (2 S, 5 A, 1 PBU); Aaron Schoone (1 S, 3 A, 2 PBU); and Jacob Schaper (3 S, 3 A).
Tomahawk closed out the season at 2-7 overall, and 2-6 in the Marawood. Rib Lake/Prentice was 1-8, 1-7.
