?1000 Books Before Kindergarten? launched at T. B. Scott Free Library

1000 Books Before Kindergarten began Oct. 1 at T. B. Scott Free Library. This new, ongoing program challenges parents to keep track of books read to their preschool children.

Families may join at the library Youth Services Desk to receive an information packet and a free book for each preschool child. A free book is awarded at each 100 book milestone, for a total of 11 free books when you reach 1,000.

Experts agree that the more children ages 0-5 hear books read to them, the more prepared they will be to learn to read upon reaching kindergarten. Other important factors include having plenty of books in the home and regularly observing adults and older children engaged in reading.

A child may begin anytime before he or she enters kindergarten. If parents read only one book at bedtime every night for three years, or three books a day for one year, they will have read 1,095 books.

For more information, call 715-536-7191, or stop in at the library with your child to join the program.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is being funded by the T. B. Scott Free Library Endowment Fund.
