The Bluejay boys soccer team opened up the season at home last Tuesday, and with a 1-0 lead through 70 minutes appeared primed to collect a win.
But Medford knotted it up in the 71st minute, then scored a goal with a header off a corner kick in the 76th minute for the eventual game-winning goal.
“The game gave us an opportunity to see our strengths and weaknesses as a team,” MHS coach Chris Behrens said. “We will be working on those weaknesses in practice so that we will be ready to start our conference season on Thursday, August 29th.”
The Bluejays got on the scoreboard first, when Logan Brunett rolled a throughball ahead of David Pophal, who finessed it past the keeper in the 20th minute. But Medford turned victory into defeat with its two late tallies.
“It was great to see the boys take a 1-0 lead, and disheartening for the whole team to take two quick goals back to back in the second half,” Behrens said. “Although we started the season with our first loss, it means nothing for the remainder of the season.”
Merrill is 0-1 on the year, while Medford is off to a 3-1 start.
