Market News

I would like to pose this question: Who is the Farmers Market vendor? I have been selling at our market here in Merrill for over 10 years now, and have had the pleasure of getting to know my fellow vendors pretty well.
They are an eclectic and diverse group, made up of farmers, retired farmers, stay at home moms and dads, city folk with gardens in the country, greenhouse operators, orchard owners, construction workers and volunteer firemen. They may come from different backgrounds or be at different stages of their lives, but they do have a few things in common.
First and foremost would be a hard-working and patient nature. Anyone who has ever tried to grow anything in this climate can tell you, it’s no simple task. Between the late springs, late frosts, torrential rains, droughts, early frosts and freezes, it’s a wonder they ever get anything to grow!
Now add planting and replanting, constant weeding, fertilizing and fighting off birds, rabbits, deer, mystery diseases and fungi and other creepy crawly pests!
Why would anyone want to put themselves through all that? Because there is another quality the market vendor possesses, a love and wonder of growing things. The ability to hold a small seed in their hands and see all the possibilities. After all that, they are able to bring the fruits of their labor to market, providing the community with locally grown produce, and in turn bring home some income for their families.
So who is the farmers market vendor? They are your neighbor, your friends, maybe even your family. And they are at Normal Park on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. till sell out, June through October.
We are also looking for more vendors. Produce must be grown in Lincoln County. The cost is $75 a season. Please call 715-921-0489 with any questions or find us (Merrill Area Farmers Market) on facebook!
