MyPlate kicks off

As part of the Healthy People Lincoln County community health plan, Lincoln County Health Department will kick off the promotion of MyPlate, a simple way to achieve a healthy and balanced diet, in Dave’s County Market in Merrill on July 11 and 12 from 3-7 p.m. Shoppers will be provided with tips and hints on how to build a healthy meal as well as how to spot healthy foods when shopping in the grocery store and an opportunity to win some fun prizes.
“Our goal is to provide the residents of Lincoln County with the knowledge and skills needed to pick out healthy foods when shopping in the grocery store,” said Brigid Flood, Public Health Nurse, Lincoln County Health Department. “We want to help make shopping for healthy food easier for everyone,” added Flood.
A recent survey showed that 52% of the community reported that their biggest barrier in cooking a healthy meal is lack of time. The second highest barrier was the lack of money.
In order to help consumers achieve a balanced diet, promotion of the MyPlate ideas will be taking place in Dave’s County Market. Some MyPlate banners will be hung throughout the store promoting healthy food options that are on sale for the week. These will help shoppers eat food that is lower in fat, salt and added sugar.
There will also be in-store cooking demos and taste testing throughout the month and in months to come. With food provided by Russ Davis Wholesale, The Potato King and Dave’s County Market, shoppers will be shown how to take their traditional meals and make them into meals that contain more nutrients and fewer calories.
Lincoln County Health Department has developed a food label for Dave’s County Market that will show which foods are the best picks for healthy eating. The label will be put into the store within a couple of months.
Currently this program is only offered at Dave’s County Market in Merrill. For more information on the program, please contact Brigid Flood at the Health Department by phone at 715-539-1371 or by email at [email protected].
