The Tomahawk American Legion Post 93 team swept last weekend’s Rhinelander tournament to keep their hot streak alive, defeating Weyawega 6-1, Chequameon 5-2, Lakeland 7-2 and Rhinelander 3-0.
“Our pitching and defense carried us through the tournament,” said Post 93 coach Wes Roessler. “We got complete games from four guys and had only had one error all weekend. It was a great tournament for the guys and showed depth because we had to fill holes for vacations, work and other commitments.”
Weyawega
Post 93 spotted Weyawega a 1-0 lead in the second inning before tying it up in the fifth. A huge 5-run sixth inning ended up being the difference in what Roessler called a “good start to the tournament.”
Fletcher Schoone went the distance, giving up just the lone run on four hits. He held the opponents to two runs in the sixth. Kevin Bolder had two hits and an RBI while Jon Nyberg, Jacob Sabielny. Trevor Iwen, Brandon Hull and Kaleb Kaminski all had hits.
“Our hitting wasn’t the best, but we were able to take advantage of the opportunities they gave us,” Roessler said. “Fletcher pitched a great game and kept the game close until we could capitalize on a few mistakes.”
Chequameon
Tomahawk jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and managed to hold their opponents scoreless through five innings on the way to their second win of the weekend.
“Chequameon is a very well coaches and talented team,” Roessler said. “We knew we had to capitalize on what was given to us.”
Jared Jarvensivu gave up four hits and aided his own cause at the plate with an RBI in the first inning. Kevin Bolder had two hits and an RBI while Schoone added two hits and two RBIs, Jordan Rossler and Iwen each chipped in a hit.
“We were able to jump out to an early lead and hold onto it,” Roessler said. “Jared pitched very well and never let Chequanmeon get anything big started.”
Lakeland
Tomahawk took a while to get things rolling in this game behind Jon Nyberg on the mound. He gave up a single run in the first and another in the sixth among the eight hits he gave up. Post 93 tied the game in the second and took control of the game with a two run fifth and four run final inning on eight hits.
“We took a while to get the bats going, but we were able to come up with some key hits,” Roessler said. “We had another game of solid pitching by Jon., he has been great for us all year.”
Rhinelander
Post 93 saved the best game of the weekend for last, engaging in a tight game with the tournament hosts where both teams recorded just three hits combines.
“This was a very exciting game to be a part of, it was a classic pitching duel,” Roessler said. “There are not many Legion or high school level games where there is a total of three hits.”
Kevin Bolder went the distance, giving up two hits.
“Kevin was lights out for most of the game,” Roessler said. “He only allowed five base runners the whole game.”
