Hatchets impress GNC coaches

Two members of the Hatchet boys basketball team picked up All-GNC honors after the past season of play. Junior Jared Jarvensivu was named to the First Team, while senior Jon Nyberg received Honorable Mention.
Jarvensivu ranked 2nd in assists (3.9 per game), 5th in steals (2.3 pg) while hitting a conference leading 92.6% of his free throws. Second-best was 86.8%. He averaged 7.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest over the 12-game conference season.
Javensivu had been deemed a Second Team player after last season.
“Jared did a great job for us at the point again this year; getting us in our stuff and being an offensive leader,” THS coach Tim Albert said. “I thought he had his best game of the year in our playoff win, he kept us in the game with some big shots and was a real leader.
“Jared had a great GNC season and coaches recognized his efforts. He did a great job on both ends of the floor.”
Nyberg led the league in rebounding by a wide margin, with 9.7 per game compared to 7.6 from Rhinelander’s Shane White and Antigo’s Nick Bolen. White was a First Team selection, while Bolen earned HM. Nyberg just missed the top-12 scorer’s list with 9.1 ppg, was third in blocks with .7 pg, and drew 9 charges in the Great Northern.
“Jon had a great career for us and was a really good rebounder as he almost averaged a double-double this year,” Albert said.
“Jon had a great GNC season and finished first in the GNC in total rebounds; and the GNC coaches recognized him for his great efforts offensively and defensively.
“He did a really nice job for us defensively and led the team in charges taken with 15.
“He improved throughout his career at THS and did a great job of being a leader this season.”
