In what director of operations Jon Smith called an “extreme pharmacy makeover,” Merrill Hometown Pharmacy transformed the former Rajek dental clinic to serve a new purpose in just 28 days. Hometown Pharmacy announced in December that it would be moving its Merrill store location from 1021 E. Main St. to the standalone building at 301 E. 2nd St.
“With the new Walmart coming, everybody is looking east,” Smith said. “We decided to go the other direction.”
The new location, which opened in mid January, was chosen to offer customers better access to the store’s pharmacy services and retail area. A new drive-through, which became operational Jan. 25, is available for customers to fill prescriptions more quickly and easily; improved parking offers more convenience; and a handicap-accessible bathroom accommodates customers with special needs. The new store layout is also designed with features to make mobility easier through the building for customers with disabilities.
Located across from Park City Credit Union, Merrill Hometown Pharmacy is conveniently located near other services including groceries, banking and the post office. It also offers more space for customers and the ability for the pharmacy to expand other service offerings in the future for the residents of the Merrill area.

The pharmacy offers a variety of services, including prescriptions, home delivery, flu shots and all vaccinations, blood pressure measurements, Medicare Part D consultations, medication management evaluations, pet prescriptions and compounded medications.
Merrill Hometown Pharmacy employs eight people. All of the staff from the Main Street location moved to the new building. The pharmacy, staffed by pharmacists Jim Becker and Leah Akey, is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to Noon.

“People have a local option with all the advantages of a national chain,” Smith said. “And all the money stays right here.”
