Kickers push East

The Bluejay soccer team played step-for-step with Wausau East in a scoreless first half in last Tuesday’s Valley opener, but the Lumberjacks punched in goals in the 54th, 61st and 76th minutes to take a 3-0 victory.
“The team played a great first half against Wausau East, keeping the score at 0-0,” MHS coach Chris Behrens said. “The team also played well into the second half, only allowing a goal in the 54th minute.
“We had our opportunities on goal, but could not put it in the back of the net. (Goalkeeper) Nathan Beyer played a great game. David Pophal had two shots on goal aiding in our attack. Paul Theorin played a great game, setting up a handful of attacking opportunities. Matthew Ladewig played great defense in his first varsity game.
“Overall the team won the midfield and defensive thirds of the field, but couldn’t put the ball in against an experienced Wausau East defense.”
Beyer finished with 13 saves, compared to 4 four Bryce Taylor. Jack McGinnity scored twice for East, wrapped around a Henry Nuckles score.
The Bluejays were 1-2 on the season.
